Healthy Communities

"...frequent streets and short blocks are valuable because of
the fabric of intricate cross-use that they permit among the
users of a city neighbourhood."
— Jane Jacobs

At PLANbyDESIGN we understand that the design of the places we live in is critical to our communities and families long term health.  The built environment including, transportation, green spaces, natural systems, pedestrian friendly design and minimizing our reliance on the automobile are all important aspects of community sustainability.

Healthy communities are planned and designed with safe and accessible neighbourhoods, well-connected streets, paths and trails and accommodation for different modes of transportation.

Sustainable Community and Neighbourhood design includes:

  • The proper layout and design of sidewalks, roads, paths and trails
  • A mixture of housing types, stores, businesses, and institutions
  • Compactness, density and accessibility
  • Access to cultural and recreational facilities
  • Safe, comfortable and attractive streets and public spaces
  • Healthy natural environments
  • Biodiversity

“In every community, there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart, there is the power to do it.”
- Marianne Williamson
