Partners, John McMullen and Daniel J. O’Brien established PLANbyDESIGN to provide comprehensive consulting services in Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture. The company is licensed by the Canadian Institute of Planning and the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects and regularly collaborates with architects, engineers, and ecologists on a variety of interdisciplinary projects.
John McMullen, is co-founder and principal at PLANbyDESIGN, a licensed landscape architect and a professional planner. He has been in professional practise for over 20 years; focusing on planning and designing safe, comfortable and attractive streets and public spaces, and preserving and enhancing healthy natural environments. John leads collaborative teams on projects ranging from community enhancement to municipal parks and waterfronts, to community signage, wayfinding, and downtown streetscapes. As an active professional he has been published on matters relating to both urban planning and landscape architecture. He presently sits on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Parks Association (OPA), the Ontario Professional Planning Institute’s (OPPI) Transportation Working Group, the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) Ontario Chapter Organizing Committee, and is a member of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architecture ‘Advocacy Task Force’.
Daniel O’Brien is co-founder and principal at PLANbyDESIGN, and a registered landscape architect. His extensive portfolio of public parks, trails, and waterfronts, includes conceptualization, design, and construction administration. Daniel has been responsible for the design of some of the most iconic landscapes in Ontario. These landscapes range from well-known public waterfronts to exclusive estate gardens. He has been commissioned by many communities to design and construct parks, waterfronts and other important public spaces and was the recipient of two design awards winning both ’Regional Honours’ and ‘National Honors’, which is the highest recognition a landscape architecture project can receive in Canada. Daniel’s knowledge of urban and landscape design and construction techniques is unparalleled among his peers and his creativity, knowledge, and willingness to share play a huge role in PLANbyDESIGN’s ongoing success.
Sarah Koeppe is a senior project manager and designer at PLANbyDESIGN and a registered landscape architect. Sarah’s range of experience has enabled her to develop a broad understanding of community design and public facilitation. Sarah has considerable professional experience, working in Canada, United States and Germany. From streetscape development, community improvement plans, wayfinding, branding and municipal trail development. She has facilitated projects throughout Ontario and the United States and been engaged in design and landscape architectural services for over 10 years. Sarah remains committed to developing livable communities by designing innovative spaces and unique community improvement projects that support active lifestyles and a healthy employment sector. Sarah is a full member in good standing of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects.
Rachel Lin is a landscape and urban designer at PLANbyDESIGN and holds a graduate degree in landscape architecture and a masters degree in architecture. Her experience in large and small-scale design projects and aptitude working with the latest digital design tools make her a great asset on many projects. Rachel is a skilled designer and enjoys working with community groups exploring the most appropriate solutions for parks, trails, play spaces, and streetscapes. Rachel coordinates graphic design and construction documentation at PLANbyDESIGN and works on a variety of mapping, graphic design, character sketching, and detailed design assignments.
Bruce McIsac manages visualization and computer modeling at PLANbyDESIGN. Visualization studios are sophisticated labs that offer communities the opportunity to see, at a detailed level, exactly what a proposed project will look like. Bruce is a leader in this field and acts as a key advisor to one of the world’s leaders in 3D Architectural Product Development out of Denmark. His mastery at producing project visualizations and managing our visualization studio regularly earns PLANbyDESIGN praise and is capable of developing stunning 3D graphics, renderings, and computer animations that leave no doubt exactly what any project will accomplish.
Paul Robertson is both a landscape and architectural technologist and works on a variety of design assignments managing CAD and geometrics at PLANbyDESIGN. Paul has worked closely with the partners at PLANbyDESIGN establishing a collaborative professional relationship spanning over 20 years. Paul is a talented designer with an eye for detail and is responsible for the production of construction and design documentation and various multi-media presentations.
Chris Bridgman is a landscape architectural intern at PLANbyDESIGN and holds degrees in landscape architecture and marketing. Chris has an excellent understanding of both landscape and urban design and a good grasp of the related technical and landscape construction issues. Chris has worked in a diversity of creative projects and is able to assist on a wide variety of projects always contributing top quality work with a high level of professionalism.
